Phosphatidylserine, also known as compound nervonic acid, is abbreviated as PS.
The structure of phosphatidylserine consists of two parts: a hydrophilic glycerol backbone as the "head" and lipophilic hydrocarbon?chain groups as the "tail". Owing to this unique amphipathic structure, phosphatidylserine can exist in both aqueous and lipid environments, making it one of the key components of cell membranes.
Phosphatidylserine belongs to the large family of Glycerophospholipids (GPLs). Among glycerophospholipids, phosphatidic acid (PA) is the simplest form. Other glycerophospholipids are named after the hydrophilic residues attached to their phosphate groups, including L?α?phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylserine (PS), L?α?phosphatidylglycerol (PG), and phosphatidylcholine (PC).
